The #2 UCLA softball team will make their way back to Easton Stadium tonight for the Bruins’ first game of the UCLA/Long Beach State Invitational against the Robert Morris Colonials at 7:00 pm PT.

Last Time Out

On Sunday, the Bruins took on the UConn Huskies in the final game of the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton. In a game where there was no scoring until the fifth inning, sophomore Holly Azevedo and redshirt junior Rachel Garcia combined to shut out the Huskies. UConn’s only baserunner came when Azevedo gave up a hit in the bottom of the second inning. Azevedo pitched the first five innings and struck out three to earn her sixth win of the year. Garcia came in to close in the bottom of the sixth and struck out four in her two innings of work.

While UCLA had a hit in each of the first two innings, the Bruin bats didn’t really get going until the fifth inning when Kelli Godin started the rally with a single up the middle. Briana Perez then hit an infield single to give the Bruins runners on first and second with just one out. Bubba Nickles drove a ball up the middle to score Godin and get UCLA on the scoreboard. Garcia was up next and was able to drive in Perez on a fielder’s choice to make it 2-0, Bruins.

UCLA would not score again until the top of the seventh. Nickles started off the inning with a walk. Zoe Shaw was also walked, giving the Bruins two on and one out. It was when Brianna Tautalafua then hit an RBI single up the middle to score Nickles and move Shaw to third. Shaw scored what would prove to be the final run of the game on a wild pitch to Coleen Sullivan and the Bruins led 4-0.

Garcia finished the Huskies off with a 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to earn her second save of the season.

Robert Morris Colonials

The Robert Morris Colonials come into tonight’s contest 3-12 overall including most recently Yesterday, they lost to San Diego State yesterday, 6-1. They appear to be heading towards their thirteenth loss of the season in their game against the Ohio Bobcats that immediately precedes tonight’s game against the Bruins. Head coach Craig Coleman took over the program in 1991 and it has been one of the most successful sports at Robert Morris. Abrielle McCartney has a .350 batting average to lead the team and Dana Vatakis is their best pitcher with a 2-3 record and 3.90 ERA.

Tonight’s game should be an easy win for the Bruins and should result in another mercy rule win for UCLA.
