Tonight, the UCLA softball team squares off against the Oregon State Beavers in the second game of their three-game set at 5 pm PT.
Last Time Out
Last night, the Bruins cruised past the Beavers, 8-1. Rachel Garcia started in the circle for UCLA and she pitched six innings before being relieved by Holly Azevedo.
In her six innings of work, Garcia allowed just one run on three hits and two walks while striking out six.
Oregon State got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles to take a 1-0 lead.
It stayed that way until the top of the fifth. Briana Perez got UCLA’s rally started by reaching on an error. Bubba Nickles then singled to give the Bruins runners on first and second with no outs. Garcia helped her own cause by hitting an RBI double to left, scoring Perez and moving Nickles to third. After Taylor Pack popped out, Aaliyah Jordan drew a walk to load the bases. Kelly Inouye-Perez opted to pinch-hit Malia Quarles for Anna Vines and Quarles delivered with an RBI single up the middle that gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead.
The sixth inning started with a pair of singles by Kelli Godin and Perez. Nickles then walked to load the bases again and, again, Garcia helped her own cause with a two-RBI single which scored both Godin and Perez. After Pack walked to re-load the bases, a passed ball allowed all of the runners to move up and scored Nickles to make it 5-1. A sacrifice fly by Jordan capped the rally by scoring Garcia as UCLA took a commanding 6-1 lead.
UCLA added two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh. After Perez was hit by a pitch, Nickles sent one out of the ballpark with a homer to center, making it 8-1.
Azevedo wrapped the game up with a 1-2-3 seventh, giving UCLA their 38th win of the season and Garcia her 18th.
Tonight’s game will also be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks National and Los Angeles starting at 5 pm PT when the Bruins will look for the series win.
