Last night, the UCLA softball team’s game against Oregon State was suspended after 21⁄2 innings with the Bruins leading 10-1. As a result, play will be resumed this morning at 10 am and the third game of the series, which had been scheduled for Noon, will be played 30 minutes after the conclusion of the suspended game.
With Briana Perez getting the night off, Bubba Nickles was in the leadoff spot for the Bruins and she got a first inning rally started for UCLA with a single up the middle. Kelli Godin followed with another single up the middle and Rachel Garcia drew a walk to load the bases for Taylor Pack. Pack cleared the bases with a three-run double down the right field line. Meanwhile, Aaliyah Jordan hit an RBI double to left which scored Pack to make it 4-0, UCLA. With still no outs, Colleen Sullivan’s two-run homer gave the Bruins a 6-0 edge. Jacqui Prober and Anna Vines both singled to keep the rally going and Nickles came up for her second at-bat of the inning and hit another single up the middle which scored Prober. Finally, after UCLA sent 13 batters to the plate, Pack ended the inning with a flyout to center. UCLA had scored seven runs on eight hits and two walks while leaving the bases loaded.
Oregon State got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double.
The Bruins picked up right where they left off in the second inning. Jordan and Prober both singled while Washington was hit by a pitch to load the bases again. Malia Quarles stepped in to pinch-hit for Vines, but she struck out looking. Bubba Nickles was up next and she drew a five-pitch walk, which brought home Jordan. That was the only run the Bruins were able to score in the second and they left the bases loaded again.
Megan Faraimo threw a 1-2-3 second inning and UCLA led 8-1 after two innings.
Garcia and Pack led off the top of the third with a pair of singles up the middle. A fielder’s choice by Jordan gave UCLA runners on the corners with one out. Colleen Sullivan picked up her third RBI of the game when she doubled to left and scored Garcia. Stevie Wisz came in to pinch-run for Sullivan and the Bruins had runners on second and third with still just one out. Prober was up next and, while she grounded out to short, she managed to score Jordan for UCLA’s tenth run of the game.
At that point, the rain intensified to a point where the game needed to be suspended. So, when play resumes this morning, the Beavers will come to bat in the bottom of the third needing to score two more runs than UCLA in the fourth and fifth innings to prevent the game from being shortened by the mercy rule.
This is your UCLA vs. Oregon State suspended game and game three open thread.
Go Bruins!!!
