Last night, Megan Faraimo allowed just two hits over five innings while striking out nine en route to a 10-0 mercy rule win by the Bruins.
Meanwhile, a leadoff walk to Briana Perez proved costly for the Sun Devils. Perez stole second and scored on an RBI single by Bubba Nickles to give UCLA a 1-0 lead. While that would prove to be enough to win the game, the Bruins didn’t let up. Rachel Garcia reached on a fielder’s choice and moved up to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball. With Paige Halstead at the dish, another wild pitch scored Garcia and UCLA led 2-0 after one at-bat.
The Bruins put up another crooked number in the fourth inning. Perez led off this inning with a bunt single to third while Nickles hit an RBI double to left which scored Perez from first. Aaliyah Jordan doubled to right to score Nickles. After an ASU pitching change, Taylor Pack homered bringing Jordan home and giving UCLA a 6-0 lead.
While the Bruins only needed a pair of runs in the fifth to invoke the mercy rule, they added four more in the inning. Jordan reached on a fielder’s choice to bring up Pack, who hit her second homer of the night which made it 8-0, UCLA. After Colleen Sullivan walked on four pitches, Malia Quarles brought her home with a pinch-hit, two-run home run that made the score 10-0, Bruins.
Today, UCLA looks for the series win when the teams meet again at 2 pm PT. This afternoon’s game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
