The Bruins travelled down to Cancun, Mexico to take part in the Cancun Challenge. Last night, they played Iowa and came out with the win. Tonight, they face off against undefeated Toledo.
When the schedule was released for the Cancun Challenge, it was obvious the two games were not going to be walks in the park. Both Iowa and Toledo had great records so far. Iowa had only lost one game leading up to the Cancun Challenge and they were not going to let UCLA be their second. Kennedy Burke started off the scoring when she nabbed a rebound for two. After that, the Bruins trailed Iowa until the last three minutes of the quarter. Even though they only trailed for some minutes, it was a feeling the Bruins were not used to.
The rest of the night was back and forth. Either the Bruins were trailing or leading by a few points. Trying to find the breakaway was proving to be difficult. It was by the end of the third quarter, early fourth, UCLA slowly found the breakaway they had been looking for. They defeated Iowa 78-65.
If Iowa was difficult at times, Toledo is going to prove to be an even bigger hurdle. Toledo has yet to lose a game all season. In their first match in the Cancun Challenge, they defeated opponent Davidson 76-41. They won by more than 30 points, it was basically a blowout. Toledo is known for games like that. In their previous games, they have easily defeated their opponents. However, Toledo is not highly ranked in the nation while UCLA is ranked No. 9. UCLA is going to be a challenge for Toledo itself who has yet to play a team in the top 25.
Regardless, UCLA is going to face a challenge in Toledo. They can be the first team to hand them their first ever loss of the season. The win, plus the win against Iowa, can boost their confidence when they return to the Pauley Pavilion to play Hawaii. UCLA has business to take care of. Once that is done they can go and relax in the beautiful city of Cancun.
