UCLA Gymnastics Looks to Bounce Back Against Oregon State

The Bruins return to competition this weekend at Gill Coliseum.

After taking a week off from competing, the UCLA Gymnastics team will travel to undefeated #17 Oregon State this weekend. UCLA took both matchups last year, winning a dual meet in Pauley Pavilion in February, 197.475-196.225. Oregon State ended up finishing second behind UCLA in the Pac 12. The Beavers started the 2017 season with a 195.575-195.275 win over #8 Auburn and are looking for a win Saturday to have their best season start since 2012.

OSU went into last week’s meet with a 2-0 record, but were coming off of a disappointing performance at Seattle Pacific on January 13 where they scored just 194.525 and recorded a pair of falls. OSU rebounded from that effort last weekend, going 24-for-24 and scoring 196.900, finishing first against Northern Illinois and again besting Seattle Pacific. The meet marked the first time this season the Beavers have hit the 49-point mark on all four events, and a score of 196.900 is the highest score through three meets in OSU history.

Oregon State is led by returning All-Americans Madeline Gardiner, Erika Aufiero and Kaytianna McMillan. Gardiner is also the reigning Pac-12 beam co-champion and was an alternate for Team Canada at the 2012 Olympics. Head Coach and Bruin alumna Tanya Chaplin is in her 20th season as the Beavers’ head coach and recorded her 300th regular season win at Seattle Pacific.

UCLA enters the week ranked No. 8 in the nation with a season average of 196.263. The Bruins are ranked third on bars, tied for sixth on vault and 12th on beam. Individual national rankings include Christine Peng-Peng Lee and Kyla Ross, who are tied for seventh on bars, and Madison Kocian, who is ninth on beam and 15th on floor. Additionally, Madison Preston is tied for 11th on vault and 20th on floor.

The meet will be televised on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Oregon at 1:30 pm PT, and delayed at 9pm PT on Pac-12 National.
