For the third week in a row, the UCLA gymnastics team will be competing away from home and they’re definitely on a hot streak after beating Oregon State last Saturday. Kyla Ross’s perfect 10 on the uneven bars earned her both the Pac 12 Freshman and Specialist of the Week. It was UCLA's first perfect 10 on bars since Samantha Peszek in 2014.
Jay Santos is in his first year as the Sun Devils’ head coach and they are led by senior Beka Conrad and junior transfer Nichelle Christopherson. ASU returns seven gymnasts from last year's lineup, including six sophomores who made immediate impact in last season's squad: Corinne Belkoff, Justine Callis, Eileen Imbus, Katelyn Lentz, Heather Udowitch, and Morgan Wilson.
ASU (2-4, 0-1) is coming off of a dual meet loss versus Cal, even though they had a season high set (193.575). Lentz won her first title of the season in the all-around, with a season high score of 38.575.
UCLA has had 31 consecutive wins against ASU, dating back to 2001. The Bruins won both meetings last year, winning the dual meet in Pauley Pavilion, 196.625-192.950.
Angi Cipra is poised to make her season debut this weekend in her hometown of Tempe, after recuperating from a foot sprain. She had an All-America 2016 season with seven scores of 9.9 or higher on floor exercise, including a career-high 9.975. The Bruins are glad to have her back!
