Let’s take a quick spin around UCLA Athletics on this Wednesday morning.
Women's Soccer
After a victory in overtime against Penn State, freshman Jessie Fleming of UCLA Women's Soccer was named UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week. Fleming scored the game-winning goal and proceeds to take the game by force ever since she joined the Bruins after the Rio Olympics.
UCLA Football
The UCLA Football team dropped out of both the USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll and the AP Top 25 Poll after the weekend's loss to Texas A&M. The Bruins did still receive some votes, however. They are now ranked 30th in the USA Today Poll with 38 points and 27th in the AP Poll with 62 points. The polls were not released until yesterday due to the Labor Day holiday and the fact that the last game of the week wasn't played until Monday night.
UCLA Baseball
Former Bruin infielder Pat Valaika was called up to the Colorado Rockies yesterday. It’s Valaika’s first big league promotion. He was UCLA’s starting shortstop on the 2013 College World Series championship team.
Valaika saw his first major league action last night in the Giants-Rockies game. With the score tied 2-2, Valaika pinch-ran in the eighth inning after Tom Murphy pinch-hit and walked. The Giants won the game 3-2.
In other baseball news, 26 returning or incoming players played in the collegiate summer baseball leagues.
Women’s Rowing
Four UCLA rowers competed in the Under-23 World Championships in the Netherlands during the final week of August. Marie Jacquet competed for France and won a bronze medal Sierra Bronkhorst rowed for Canada’s B team and finished seventh overall. Saskia Budgett and Kyra Edwards both rowed for Great Britain. Budgett’s crew finished fourth overall while Edwards’ crew took second in the B final behind Bronkhorst’s Canadian team.
Go Bruins!!!
