Other than the football team practicing, August has been a quiet month for other Bruin sports. But, there has been some news recently. So, let’s catch up on the news from when you may have been on vacation or watching Monday’s eclipse. It’s time for the return of What’s Bruin.
The Women’s Soccer team won its second straight game on Sunday when they defeated Long Beach State by a score of 5-1. Bruin freshman Delanie Sheehan scored two goals and sophomore Jessie Fleming had a goal and two assists in the win.
Fleming’s performances on Sunday and in the season opener on Friday were enough to earn her this week’s UCLA/Muscle Milk Athlete of the Week award. It’s the fifth time in her career that Fleming has earned the award. She was also selected as Top Drawer Soccer’s Player of the Week.
Bruins In the Pros
UCLA alum Scott McCarron won the Dick’s Sporting Goods Open. It was McCarron’s third win this year on the PGA Tour Champions circuit. The PGA Tour Champions was formerly known as the Senior PGA Tour.
Men’s Water Polo
The UCLA Men’s Water Polo team loses a player and gains a coach. Ryder Roberts finished his Men’s Water Polo career last season, but will serve this year as an assistant coach to Adam Wright.
The team also announced that current assistant coach Jason Falitz has promoted to Associate Head Men's Water Polo Coach.
Track & Field
New Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Avery Johnson continues to build his staff.
UCLA alumn Devin Elizondo has been named as an assistant track & field and cross country coach. Elizondo returns to UCLA after serving as the cross country head coach at UC Davis last season.
Jennifer DeRego has also been named as an assistant track & field and cross country coach. DeRego joins UCLA from Heritage High School in Brentwood where she was the head cross country and track & field coach. She previously coached at the collegiate level at her alma mater Cal Poly and the US Military Academy in West Point, NY.
Ena Shibahara has been selected to compete in the 2017 American Collegiate Invitational. Her participation in the even can earn Shibahara a wild-card entry into next year’s US Open.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Tennis team has added Ayan Broomfield as a transfer from Clemson. Broomfield will be a junior and will be eligible to play immediately.
The UCLA Men’s Soccer team defeated Santa Ana FC, 2-1, in their final exhibition match of the year. Milan Iloski scored and Robert Knights broke a 1-1 tie in the 89th minute to give the Bruins the win. The Men’s Soccer team opens the 2017 season on Saturday at the University of San Francisco.
