Well, Wednesday night’s match proved to be a very tough one for UCLA as they lost the match and the Pac-12 Championship to Washington.
Even if the Bruins beat Southern Cal tonight and Washington loses this afternoon, the best UCLA can hope for is a tie for first. But, in that case, the Huskies still have the tiebreaker as a result of beating UCLA in the teams only meeting of the season Wednesday night.
Wednesday’s match was pretty much all-Huskies from the get-go. They dominated the first set beating the Bruins 25-11. UCLA’s bright spot was the second set which they won 25-22. While the third was close like the second set, Washington prevailed to take a 2-1 lead for the match. That seemed to deflate the Bruins who lost the third set 15-25.
For the match, UCLA only hit .125. They actually had a .000 hitting percentage in the first set. They improved to .200 in the second and were at .064 in the third. In the fourth set, the Bruins hit .200, but Washington did an even better job closing out the match by hitting .469
That doesn’t mean that the Bruins have nothing to play for when Southern Cal comes to Westwood today. First, it’s a rivalry match against the Trojans. Second, it’s important that the team use today’s match to get back to their winning ways in advance of the NCAA Tournament. And, speaking of the NCAA Tournament, the Women’s Volleyball bracket will be announced tomorrow at 6pm on ESPN U and today is the Bruins’ last chance to impress the selection committee and affect their seeding.
Southern Cal comes into tonight’s match looking to make a statement to the committee as well. They have split their last four matches and lost on Wednesday night at Washington State. So, a win over UCLA would certainly help their tournament seeding.
The last time these teams met it was to start conference play on September 21 when the Bruins won in 4 sets. Since that meeting in September, Southern Cal has gone 10-8 in conference play. A win by the Bruins at home would leave the Trojans at .500 in conference play.
