UCLA saw its six-game winning streak end on Friday night when the ninth-ranked Bruins were swept by Arizona in Tucson, 26-28, 21-25, 20-25.
In the first set, UCLA led for most of the set after the Bruins jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Arizona kept it close. The Wildcats tied it at 12-12 and again at 13-13. The Bruins then went on a 5-1 run to make it 18-14. The teams split the next 6 points to give the Bruins a 21-17 lead. But, that’s when the Wildcats went on a 6-1 run to take a 23-22 lead over UCLA. UCLA tied it back up at 23-23 and the teams seesawed back and forth with neither team getting the needed two-point lead to win the set until the score was 26-26. But then Torrey Van Winden committed consecutive attack errors to give Arizona two points and the set.
Arizona started the second set by scoring 8 of the first 11 points to take an 8-3 lead. But, then, the Bruins came back and, eventually, tied it up 15-15. The teams battled back and forth and the score would be tied again at 19-19. But a 6-2 Arizona run won the set for the Wildcats.
In the third, it was a back and forth affair and the teams were tied at 9 after the first 18 points. But, then, the Bruins took a two-point lead and they continued to lead by two with the score 15-13. That’s when the Wildcats went on a 6-0 run to make it 19-15. UCLA narrowed the lead to as close as two at 19-17 and again at 21-19 but a 4-1 Arizona run finished off the set and the match.
Reily Buechler was the only Bruin in double figures in kills with 10 as UCLA had only a .134 hitting percentage for the match.
