Former UCLA Bruin Karsta Lowe won a bronze medal yesterday as an integral part of the US Women’s Volleyball team as Team USA, coached by Bruin legend Karch Kiraly, defeated the Netherlands in four sets.
Lowe played in all eight of Team USA’s matches. In the Bronze Medal match, she recorded four kills, an ace and a dig. Her best match of the the tournament was in the semifinal loss to Serbia where she had a team-leading 13 kills. Unfortunately, Team USA lost that match in five sets which sent them to the Bronze Medal match.
This was the first Olympics for Lowe.
While Kiraly is Team USA’s head coach, the Olympics awards medals to athletes only. Coaches do not earn medals based on their team’s performances. As a result, Kiraly does not add to UCLA’s medal count, which now stands at 6 golds, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
Congratulations to Karsta, Karch and Team USA!
Go Bruins!!!
