The #9 UCLA Women’s Volleyball team starts Pac-12 play tonight with the first Crosstown Cup event of the year when they head across town to face the #21 USC Trojans at the Galen Center.
The Bruins had last weekend off after defeating Pepperdine and Long Beach State on Tuesday and Wednesday nights as they rebounded from their first loss of the season at the hands of the University of San Diego.
Those two victories moved the team back into the Top 10 in this week’s AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll where they are ranked 9th.
Meanwhile, across town, the Trojans are riding an eight-game winning streak after they dropped the first three games of the year.
The teams last met on Thanksgiving Eve when UCLA beat last year’s Pac-12 champs in 5 sets at the Galen Center. UCLA leads the all-time series 61-56 and have taken 3 of the last four meetings between the schools.
And, for those of you who didn’t know, it turns out that Bruin Libero Taylor Formico is the cousin of US Olympian Kerri Walsh Jennings. An espnW profile on Formico quotes the three-time gold medalist, saying, "She's just relentless. She'll run through fire or a brick wall to get a ball up for her team."
Formico is now ninth in UCLA history on the all-time digs list and needs just seven to total 1,200 at UCLA and fifteen to reach 2,000 in her collegiate career because she recorded 792 at UCSB in 2012. Twenty-one more digs will tie her with Jenny Johnson for eighth place all-time at UCLA.
Go Bruins!
