After sweeping Austin Peay last night, the Bruins’ tournament gets at least a little tougher tonight when UCLA faces the Cal Poly Mustangs. That’s because the Mustangs have only lost two matches all season long.
Now, it helps that those two losses came to the Washington Huskies and the Oregon Ducks, but, at the same time, the Bruins didn’t exactly have an easy time against other Pac-12 schools during conference play.
More notable is the fact that the Mustangs have not lost a match since September 7th. They are riding a 22-game winning streak as they come into Pauley Pavilion tonight.
Also, don’t expect the Mustangs to be in awe of their surroundings in Pauley. That’s because the Mustangs are led by former Bruin Torrey Van Winden. Van Winden played for UCLA last season as a freshman, but opted to transfer to Cal Poly so that she could play with her older sister Adlee who is a junior.
This is the type of match that UCLA needs to win if they hope to go deep into the tournament. In fact, only gets harder from here. If the Bruins can survive and advance, the Florida Gators are waiting and the Gators have also only lost two matches all season.
Can the Bruins get past Cal Poly?
They should be able to, but this year’s team hasn’t been very consistent and that could be a problem against the Van Winden sisters and the rest of the Mustangs.
This is your UCLA vs. Cal Poly game thread.
Go Bruins!!!
