On Friday, the UCLA women’s volleyball team was swept by the Oregon Ducks, 25-23, 26-24, 25-16. Today, the Bruins are in Corvallis for an afternoon match against the Oregon State Beavers.

Last Time Out

On Friday night, UCLA lost a match the Bruins should have won. They were facing an Oregon Ducks team which came in with just one win in conference play. Despite that, the Ducks managed to sweep UCLA.

In the first set, the Bruins began with an 11-2 run. Soon, they led 15-7. Then, the Ducks managed to claw their way all the way back with a 10-3 run which made it 18-17, UCLA. Oregon tied it up for the first time at 19-19, but the Bruins scored four of the next points to make it 23-20.

Then, UCLA finished their complete and total collapse when Oregon scored the next five points to steal set one.

Set two was a battle in the early going. After 25 points, the Ducks had a slight 13-12 lead. A 5-1 Bruin run gave UCLA a 17-14 lead but, again, Oregon came back and soon it was 18-18. It was tied again at 21-21 and again at 22-22. UCLA jumped ahead 24-22 and had their first set point of the match but, again, Oregon came back. This time, they scored four straight points to win this set, 26-24.

The teams split the first ten points of the third set before Oregon used a 5-1 run to take a 10-6 lead. UCLA did manage to close Oregon’s lead to 12-11 but that was as close as the Bruins got in the third set which the Ducks went on to win 25-16 to finish the sweep of the Bruins.

Oregon State Beavers

The Beavers are another bad volleyball team. Like what should have happened in Eugene on Friday, UCLA should be able to beat the Beavers who are just 2-5 in conference play. After starting Pac-12 action with wins over Oregon and Colorado, the Beavers have lost five straight matches.

While this should be another easy win for the Bruins, head coach Michael Sealy needs to get it together for today’s match against the Beavers.

Normally, I would predict how I think this match will turn out but, after Friday’s loss to Oregon, I’m not going to make a prediction because this UCLA team is too inconsistent to even make a prediction and that says it all.
