Tonight, the UCLA women’s volleyball team looks to remain undefeated in the Pac-12 when the Bruins host the Washington State Cougars at 6 pm in Pauley Pavilion. UCLA started off conference play by beating Southern Cal last Wednesday and, then, by sweeping Arizona State on Sunday, 25-13, 25-14, 25-20.

Last Time Out

The Bruins made quick work of their match against the Sun Devils on Sunday. For the match, UCLA outhit Arizona State .311 to .082.

The first set started off pretty evenly matched and Arizona State held the edge early. Down 4-3, the Bruins took the lead on a 3-0 run, but the set was tied as late as 7-7. An Arizona State attack error followed by a Mac May kill started a 7-1 Bruin run that the Sun Devils couldn’t recover from and UCLA went on to win the set, 25-13.

The second set began just like the first. ASU had a 4-3 lead when the Bruins went on a big run. This time, it was a 10-1 UCLA which made it 13-5. UCLA never looked back and went on to win this set, 25-14.

After the break, UCLA came out and scored the first six points of the third set and looked to be ready to cruise to a sweep, but ASU had different ideas. The Sun Devils scored 14 of the next 20 points to tie the set up, 14-14, and ASU wasn’t done either. After UCLA scored a pair of points, Arizona State went on a 5-1 run to take a 19-17 lead. Finally, the Bruins shut the door with an 8-1 run to win the set 25-20 and complete the sweep.

Washington State Cougars

After opening the season with a win, Washington State were swept by Iowa in their second match of the season. After that, the Cougars rattled off eleven straight wins including a 3-1 win over #8 Washington to start conference play at home. That is the only signature win during that streak as the Cougars faced a plethora of inferior teams.

When they faced #21 UC Berkeley on the road last Saturday, the Cougars lost their second match of the season.

Outlook

Given the fact that the Cougars lost on the road last weekend, it seems unlikely like they will be able to beat the Bruins at Pauley tonight. That said, I’m not expecting UCLA to sweep tonight’s match either. I’m predicting a 3-1 Bruin win.
