A sweep of the Oregon schools last weekend has moved the UCLA women’s volleyball team back into the Top 25. UCLA is now ranked 23rd in the nation. Sunday’s sweep over Oregon certainly gave the Bruins a boost in the polls.
Last Time Out
On Sunday, the only real contested set was the first set. UCLA started strong and gained an early lead in that set. Soon, the Bruins led 8-4, but the Beavers came back to tie it at 8-8 and the rest of the set was a battle. In fact, Oregon State led 20-19 and it looked like the Beavers would take the set. But UCLA battled back with a 4-1 run to make it 23-21. OSU managed to tie it back up 23-23 before the Bruins got a pair of kills from Savvy Simo to close out the first set.
The Bruins jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the second, though the Beavers close the gap to just two points at 8-6. That’s when UCLA went on a 10-1 run, which sealed the win in this set and gave the Bruins an 18-7 lead. UCLA finished the set by winning seven of the final twelve points to win the set, 25-13.
After the teams split the first eight points of the third set, a 4-0 run by the Bruins put UCLA ahead for good. Soon, UCLA led 20-11 as Oregon State could not score on consecutive rallies unti the Bruins had built an insurmountable lead. From there, a pair of kills from Mac May, another pair from Emily Ryan and a final kill from Simo closed out both the set and the match.
Arizona Wildcats
The Wildcats are 5-13 in the Pac-12. So, conference season has not gone well for Arizona. But, UofA has won three of the last four matches and the only loss during that time came against the #10 Washington Huskies.
With the ‘Cats playing so well of late, I’m looking for this to be a tough match, especially given the fact that it’s on the road.
I’m picking the Bruins in five sets today.
This is your UCLA vs. Arizona women’s volleyball open thread.
Go Bruins!!
