The UCLA women’s volleyball team wraps up the regular season tonight with a match against Southern Cal at the Galen Center tonight at 7 pm PT. The Bruins will bring their three-match winning streak across town as UCLA looks to finish the regular season strong.
Last Time Out
On Wednesday, the Bruins visited the Arizona Wildcats and UCLA wanted to get back home for Thanksgiving as quickly as possible as they swept the ‘Cats, 25-20, 27-25, 25-22.
UCLA led for most of the first set, but it was a 5-0 run that started when Arizona led 11-10 that put the Bruins in front for good. The Wildcats were able to close the lead to just a point twice, but they were unable to tie it and UCLA went on to win the first set 25-20.
The second set was a back-and-forth battle with neither team ever leading by more than three points. Ultimately, Arizona led 23-21 when the Bruins scored six of the final eight points of the set and four of the last five points to claim a 27-25 victory.
The third set was a lot like the second. In this one, neither team led by more than four points and the Bruins did that twice at 21-17 and again at 22-18. Arizona tried to come back by scoring four of the next five points to make it 23-22, UCLA, but Savvy Simo gave UCLA their first match point and an Arizona attack error finished off the match.
Mac May led the Bruins with 21 kills while Devon Chang and Cali Thompson were in double-digits in assists with 22 and 20, respectively. Simo led the team with 14 digs.
Southern Cal Trojans
Tonight’s match is going to be a battle. Both teams are looking to close out the season with a win in order to impress the NCAA selection committee to give them a higher seed in the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Tournament.
These teams are pretty evenly matched. Since the teams met back in September, they’ve both gone 11-7 in conference play. UCLA has the slight edge in the conference standings because the Bruins won that September meeting.
Tonight, Southern Cal will look for payback.
Hopefully, the Bruins can continue to play well and win this one. I’m expecting it to go a full five sets with a 3-2 UCLA victory.
This is your UCLA women’s volleyball vs. Southern Cal open thread.
Go Bruins!!! Beat $c!!
