“Let’s play two!” was the mantra of Chicago Cubs legend Ernie Banks, but it might as well be the motto of the UCLA Women’s Water Polo team who will play two doubleheaders this weekend as part of the UCSB Winter Invitational.
Today, the team has a doubleheader against Pacific and Indiana.
After the team’s first two games last weekend, the team is holding opponents to only one goal per game. That’s something which could become an early season trend if they can do the same again today.
UCLA is undefeated against both of today’s opponents. The Bruins are 18-0 against Pacific and 10-0 versus Indiana. With the Tigers ranked 10th and the Hoosiers 15th, expect UCLA to remain undefeated against these foes.
While the season is still young, Bruin freshman and US Olympian Maddie Musselman is already making an impact. Musselman currently leads the team with six goals and earned the MPSF/Kap7 Newcomer of the Week award for here performance last weekend.
Hot on Musselman’s heels are three other Bruins who have each scored five goals in UCLA’s first two games. Rachel Fattal, Kodi Hill, and Devin Grab all scored five goals each last weekend while Alexa Tielmann has four.
The Bruins are still ranked third in this week’s CWPA Top 25 poll, but they moved 2 points closer to second place and now trail #2 Southern Cal by only 2 points.
