After #3 UCLA hosted #6 UC Irvine last weekend in the team’s home opener, the Anteaters were probably wishing that lightning had kept the teams out of the pool. But, the only lightning to be found was the Bruin offense which scored 16 goals to UCI’s 1.
In fact, lightning is the appropriate description for UCLA’s offense against the Anteaters because Bronte Halligan scored just 20 seconds after the start of the game.
When all was said and done, Maddie Musselman led the Bruins with four goals, while Lizette Rosenbloom and Alys Williams each added a hat trick of their own. Alexa Theilman scored two goals and Halligan,Kelsey O’Brien, Kodi Hill and Rachel Whitelegge each scored one.
Mary Brooks scored UCI’s lone goal to deny the Bruin shutout. UCLA goalie Carly Kapana had 13 saves on the night.
Today, the Bruins travel down to Irvine for the Barbara Kalbus Invitational. The Barbara Kalbus Invitational is a 16-team tournament, featuring most of the best teams in the country, which starts today and runs through Sunday. If UCLA wins today’s game against UC San Diego, they will play the winner of the Hawai’i-Pacific game tomorrow at 10:30am at the UC Irvine Aquatics Center. If UCLA loses to UCSD, they will move into the loser’s bracket and face the loser of the Hawai’i-Pacific game tomorrow at 10:30am at the Corona del Mar Pool. They will then have a second game tomorrow based on the results of the first.
Considering that UCLA beat the Tritons 17-2 last month in Santa Barbara, the Bruins should easily advance in the tournament today.
