The undefeated UCLA Women’s Water Polo team will jump back into the pool this evening after 11 days off when they visit Long Beach State. The last time out they swept a doubleheader against Michigan and UC San Diego, 12-5 and 17-2, respectively.
The Bruins, who continue to be ranked 3rd in the nation, have never lost to the 49ers, having won all 33 games played between the two teams.
UCLA is led by redshirt senior Rachel Fattal who has already scored 14 goals in just six games this season. That gives her a career total of 184 goals. With 3 goals, she will pass Catharine von Schwarz and move into fifth place on UCLA’s all-time goals list. She is only 15 goals behind Kelly Rulon, whose 181 goals is atop that list.
In order to beat Long Beach State, the Bruins will need to stop Christina Kotsia, Tori Morrissey and Virginia Smith. Each of these women scored four goals in three games over the weekend. With UCLA showing a lot of offensive firepower in their first six games, the real key to tonight’s game will be getting the ball into the cage behind freshman goalie Eirini Patra. While she is only a freshman, she has a lot of experience as a member of the Greek National Team.
The Bruins will complete their weekend with the annual Alumni Game tomorrow at 2 pm at Spieker Aquatic Center.
