The UCLA Women’s Water Polo team heads to Hawai’i this weekend for games against San Diego State, Hawai’i and UCSB. They kick the weekend off tonight at 10:15 pm PT when they take on San Diego State.
The Bruins are back in action after a 12-day break since they played their last game against UC Berkeley. Against the Bears, UCLA relied on seven second half goals to win 10-4.
While the Bruins never trailed, the outcome of the game was never really in doubt even though the first half was a close one. Maddie Musselman got the scoring started with just 43 seconds left in the first quarter. Kodi Hill added UCLA’s second goal just 36 seconds into the second quarter. Following a UC Berkeley goal, Rachel Whitelegge scored her second goal of the season to make it 3-1. The Bears would cut the Bruins’ lead to 3-2 at the half.
Mackenzie Barr started the big second half for UCLA when she scored just 32 seconds into the third quarter. UC Berkeley responded with a goal to cut the Bruins’ lead back to one again before Rachel Fattal scored. Hill picked up her second goal before the end of the third.
The fourth quarter was all Rachel. She scored her second goal of the game 4 seconds into the final quarter. With 6:28 left, Fattal completed her hat trick and she would add her fourth of the game after Anna Illes got one back for the Bears. Fattal is now in sole possession of third place on the UCLA All-Time Scoring list.
Alys Williams picked up another insurance goal to let the Bruins come out a 10-4 winner.
San Diego State is one of both 12th-ranked teams UCLA will face in Hawai’i since UC Santa Barbara is tied with the Aztecs in this week’s CWPA Top 25 poll.
