The Bruins played two water polo games yesterday and came away with two wins. But it wasn’t quite as easy as that sounds. UCLA’s game against Michigan came down to the wire.
Overall, it was a low scoring affair. Maddie Musselman got the Bruins on the scoreboard first with a penalty shot with 6:42 left in the first quarter. The Wolverines tied it up about two minutes later and took a 2-1 lead a minute after that. A power play goal from Lizette Rozeboom tied it back up and was the last score of the first half.
Third quarter goals from Lexi Liebowitz and Kelsey Blacker gave the Bruins a 4-2 lead heading into the fourth, but Michigan’s Maddy Steere scored on a penalty shot and then completed a hat trick to tie the game, 4-4.
When the Bruins needed a big goal, they turned to Musselman to get it and she got it with just over two minutes to go to win the game in regulation.
In the nitecap, the Bruins just overwhelmed the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds, 21-4. Rozeboom scored four goals in that game while Bronte Halligan and Sarah Sheldon each had a hat trick. Louise Hazell and Grace Reego each added two more while Devin Grab, Brooke Maxson, Nicole Reynolds, Emily Skelly, Roxy Wheaton, Allison Wieseler and Musselman all scored once each.
Today, the Bruins play another doubleheader. First, they face the host #19 UCSB Gauchos at 10:30 am and, later, they will take on the #16 UCSD Tritons at 2:00 pm.
Go Bruins!!!
