The UCLA women’s water polo team will wrap up play at the UCSB Winter Invitational today with games against the #9 Michigan Wolverines and #17 UCSB Gauchos.
Day Two
On the second day of this weekend’s event, UCLA won both of their games. In the first game, the Bruins defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters, 10-6. Maddie Musselman scored four goals while freshman Val Ayala made another big splash by picking up her second hat trick in her second collegiate career game. The Anteaters scored first in this game, but the Bruins responded with a pair of goals from Ayala and Musselman to take a 2-1 lead after one.
Ayala’s second goal opened the second quarter scoring. After an Anteater goal, Lizette Rozeboom made it 4-2, Bruins. Musselman added a last-second goal to give UCLA a 5-2 lead at the half.
With 3:34 left in the third, Rozeboom scored the first goal of the second half. About thiry seconds after UC Irvine scored their third, Bronte Halligan scored her first goal of the season and that would end up being the game-winner for UCLA as the Bruins took a 7-3 lead. The teams would score one more goal each before the end of the quarter to make it 8-4 heading into the fourth. UCLA’s final goal of the quarter came from Ayala with just a second left.
UCLA got a pair of goals from Musselman in the fourth to wrap things up.
In UCLA’s second game, the Bruins defeated Cal Baptist by a score of 17-8. Rozeboom picked up a hat trick in this one while Ayala’s streak ended with her only scoring once in this game. But, Ayala did score the eventual game-winner in this one. Grace Reego, Bella Baia, Allison Wieseler and Roxy Wheaton all had two goals each while Whitelegge, Sarah Sheldon, Skylar Savar, Brooke Maxson and Emily Skelly also contributed goals.
Go Bruins!
