Here's today's news from around UCLA Athletics.
UCLA Baseball
Former UCLA Pitcher Adam Plutko was promoted to the Cleveland Indians from Triple A Columbus. It's the first time Plutko has been in the major leagues.
In promoting Plutko, Cleveland has reunited Plutko with his former rotation mate Trevor Bauer. The duo were part of UCLA's weekend pitching rotation in 2011.
Plutko told ESPN's Mike and Mike on Tuesday that he almost missed the phone call from Indians' Director of Player Personnel Carter Hawkins because he was at a friend's wedding. Plutko said:
They literally just got done saying ‘I do,’ and we got done taking the bridal party pictures...and it was time to celebrate. I started getting a call from the head of player development with the Indians and I put it straight through to voicemail.
When the phone rang again, Plutko's wife, Allison, who UCLA fans should recognize as former Bruin gymnast Allison Taylor, prodded him to answer because it could be important. Plutko acknowledged the lesson.
My wife was with me right there, and I guess the moral of the story is your wife is always right. I should’ve just answered it the first time, so the joke’s on me.
Plutko is the ninth former Bruin currently on a major league roster and, when he plays his first game, he will become the 79th major leaguer to have played for UCLA.
UCLA Women’s Soccer
A trio of Bruins swept this week's Pac-12 awards for Women's Soccer. Senior forward Darian Jenkins won the Offensive Player of the Week awars for the second time this season. Sophomore defender Hailie Mace won Defensive Player of the Week. Meanwhile, freshman Teagan Micah added her second Goalkeeper of the Week for the season.
This is the first weekly sweep by a school this season and only the third sweep since the three weekly awards were established in 2014.
