Junior righthander Jake Bird took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as UCLA defeated San Jose State in the second game of this weekend’s three-game series yesterday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Bird didn’t even allow a baserunner for the Spartans until the 5th inning when he issued a walk to Josh Nashed. He kept SJSU scoreless until the 7th inning when he walked Nashed for the second time and gave up a double to Chris Williams to move Nashed to third. One batter later, the Spartans scored their only run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Kellen Strahm. Ryan Garcia and Nick Scheidler pitched a perfect 8th and 9th, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Bruin bats were hot.

Michael Toglia got UCLA on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first when he singled home Daniel Amaral. In the third, Chris Bouchard drove in what would be the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly that scored Jake Pries to give UCLA a 2-0 lead.

It was the fifth inning when the Bruins did the most damage. They batted around sending ten batters to the plate in inning and scored seven runs in the process. Nick Valaika’s double drove home Brett Stephens for the first run of the inning. Following a walk to Bouchard to load the bases, Ryan Kreidler was hit by a pitch to score Toglia. Daniel Rosica then hit a two-run single to center to make it 6-0 Bruins. The rally was capped with a 3-run home run by Amaral which gave UCLA a 9-0 lead.

The Bruins added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on sacrifice fly by Daniel Rosica.

UCLA looks to break out their brooms today at 1pm, weather permitting, when they are scheduled to play the final game of the series.

The Bruins will send sophomore RHP Jon Olson (0-0, 7.36 ERA last season) to the hill today to take on Spartan senior lefty Graham Gomez (2-5, 5.40 ERA last season).
