UCLA Baseball Visits Arizona State This Weekend

The Bruins are suddenly on a hot streak. Heading into play last weekend, UCLA was 7-11 overall and 1-2 in Pac-12 play. Now, they are back to .500 at 11-11 and are 4-2 in the conference. As a result, the team is now sitting in a four-way tie for second in the conference standings with Southern Cal, Oregon and Washington. They are trailing conference leader Oregon State by just two games.

Arizona State

The Pac-12 schedule has not been kind so for to the Sun Devils. They opened conference play by being swept at home by the #2 Oregon State Beavers and, then last weekend, they dropped two of three to Southern Cal.

Arizona State will send at least two leftys to the hill this weekend. Eli Lingos (3-1, 3.05) is the top starter for Sun Devils and he will be on the mound tonight while Chaz Montoya (2-1, 4.76) will start tomorrow. Sunday’s pitcher has not yet been named.

Their top hitter is Lyle Lin. Lin is a true freshman who has already had 11 multi-hit games. He also leads ASU with a .351 batting average and has 13 RBIs.

UCLA

Griffin Canning (1-1, 2.72) starts off the series tonight for the visiting Bruins while Moises Ceja (1-1, 2.39) will start tomorrow and Jon Olsen (1-1, 3.96) on Sunday.

Last weekend’s big series against UC Berkeley helped the Bruins raise their team batting average almost 20 points from .237 to .254. Scoring 20 runs in a game as they did on Sunday certainly helped raise their average, but the Bruins bashed all weekend against the Golden Bears.

Outlook

This weekend’s series could go either way, but the key lies in the Bruin bats. If the Bruins are able to keep hitting the ball well, they could come away with an important road sweep. If suddenly their bats go cold, it could be a long weekend in Phoenix.
