Griffin Canning threw a complete game shutout as UCLA topped Southern Cal last night by a score of 2-0.

The Bruins got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning. Following a lead-off double by Michael Toglia, Chase Strumpf homered to left center, giving UCLA a 2-0 lead.

That’s all they would need, which is good because that’s all they would get in this pitcher’s duel.

Canning struck out ten while allowing seven hits and walking one. He’s now 5-2 on the season.

Things did get a little rough for Canning in the bottom of the eighth. After striking out the leadoff batter, Canning gave up a single. Following a fielder’s choice, Canning allowed two more singles to load the bases, but he got out of the inning unscathed when a grounder to short allowed UCLA to get the third out on another fielder’s choice at second.

Tonight, UCLA goes for the series win when the teams play the second game of the series. Moises Ceja (2-4, 2.96 ERA) will be on the mound for the Bruins while he will face off against Southern Cal freshman Chris Clarke (4-1, 5.64 ERA).
