Freshman Zach Pettway struck out ten batters over seven innings while allowing just two runs, but the Bruin offense couldn’t pick him up last night against the Arizona Wildcats.
Pettway gave up both runs in the bottom of the first but held the Cats scoreless after that.
The Bruins managed to cut the Arizona lead in half in the fifth when Kyle Cuellar hit an RBI single to center that scored Daniel Amaral, but Jeremy Ydens followed Cuellar by lining out to center to end the inning.
UCLA threatened again in the sixth. Kevin Kendall, Chase Strumpf and Jake Pries each singled to load the bases for the Bruins with just one out, but Amaral and Garrett Mitchell both struck out to end the Bruin threat.
Arizona added an insurance run in the eighth to seal their victory.
This afternoon, the Bruins look to salvage a game from this weekend’s roadtrip when the teams meet at 3:30 pm PT.
This is your UCLA Bruins at Arizona Wildcats game three open thread.
Go Bruins!!!
