Oregon State took yesterday’s game, 7-3, to even this weekend’s series to a game each. Today, UCLA faces the Beavers again in the rubber game of the three-game set at Noon PT at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Yesterday, the Bruins got on the board first in the bottom of the second. Jack Stronach led off with a double and Jake Pries who followed was hit by a pitch. Stronach moved over to third when Michael Toglia flew out to right and he then scored when Matt McLain reached on a fielder’s choice.
But, the Bruins’ 1-0 lead was short-lived. In the top of the third, Oregon State got the run back with a walk, a stolen base and a single down the right field line.
The game remained tied 1-1 until the bottom of the fifth. Toglia led off the inning with a double to right center and he scored when McLain tripled. McLain scored when Kevin Kendall grounded out to second. That gave the Bruins a 3-1 lead, but the Beavers came back and tied it in the seventh and it remained tied 3-3 going into the ninth.
John Savage went to the pen and brought Holden Powell in to start the ninth, but Powell had a bad outing. He gave up four runs on three walks and two hits before leaving the game with just one out. That put the Beavers up 7-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Brandon Eisert struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the win for the Beavers.
This afternoon, the teams meet again at Noon PT in the rubber game of the series. Today’s pitchers will be Jesse Bergin (3-2, 2.25 ERA) for the Bruins while Sam Tweedt (1-1, 2.25 ERA) will take the hill for the Beavers.
