Cal State Northridge comes over the hill tonight to play the Bruins at Pauley Pavilion.
In their season opener, the Matadors pretty easily defeated Pomona-Pitzer 96-72. The Matadors are a young team with nine players who made their debut on Friday including their leading scorer Darin Johnson, a redshirt junior who transferred from Washington.
The Matadors also have two other transfers who played their first game from CSUN the other night. Rakim Lubin is a redshirt sophomore from Miami who transferred from UCONN and Dylan Johns is a redshirt junior from England who transferred from Texas A&M.
CSUN is starting its fourth season under head coach Reggie Theus, who has previously coached for New Mexico State and the Sacramento Kings. Under Theus’ leadership, the Matadors have yet to break .500 for any of his first three seasons.
Overall, the expectations for this year’s CSUN basketball team are pretty high. The team is expected to finish third in the Big West behind Long Beach State and UC Irvine.
But, that said, the Matadors shouldn’t pose much of a problem for the Bruins, especially considering that UCLA beat them last season 77-45. But the fact that both teams appear to be improved could at least make this a better game than last year.
