Portland travels to Fullerton after starting their season 3-0 under new head coach Terry Porter. Porter, who was named Portland’s head coach in April, previously coached the Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns in the NBA.
Because this is Porter’s first collegiate coaching job, he hired former Southern Cal assistant Bob Cantu and former Washington State assistant Bob Johnson to help with the transition.
On the court, the Pilots are led by senior guard Alec Winterling, who is averaging 19 points and 8 assists per game so far this season, and junior forward Gabe Taylor, who is averaging 17.3 points and 8 rebounds per game so far.
What should make this matchup interesting, at least to start, is that the Pilots appear to be a defense-oriented team. They are currently ranked 5th in the nation in defensive rebounding, 6th in defensive field goal percentage, and 17th in scoring defense.
Considering that UCLA has relied primarily on offense to win their games so far, it will be interesting to see what if the defensively-minded Pilots are able to slow down the Bruin offense.
Of course, UCLA should be able to power past the Pilots and win this one easily.
