“Oh, My!” That was been the catch phrase of legendary broadcast Dick Enberg throughout his illustrious career. UCLA will honor Enberg during tonight’s game against Oregon.
Before Enberg started calling games for NBC, he was a local broadcaster who called games for UCLA, the Angels and the Rams. According to UCLA’s announcement regarding tonight’s celebration, Enberg told Larry Stewart of the LA Times for a 2007 column:
That job was absolutely responsible for NBC hiring me. The people at NBC were aware that I was an announcer for the Angels and Rams, but it was UCLA that got me the job.
The 82-year old Enberg retired from broadcasting in October, but, tonight, in addition to being honored for his contributions to UCLA basketball, Enberg will get join both the UCLA Radio broadcast in the first half and the ESPN TV broadcast in the second half.
For many of us who didn’t get to experience Enberg calling a Bruins broadcast or who only know him from his NBC work, tonight should be a treat.
Oh my, indeed!
