Men’s Basketball

UCLA assistant basketball coach Ed Schilling has taken a position on the staff of new Indiana Hoosiers coach Archie Miller.

Schilling had been an assistant at UCLA for the past four seasons.

Ben Bolch of the LA Times quotes a statement from Steve Alford:

I’m especially grateful to Ed for all his hard work with our program the last four years. Working with Ed here on our coaching staff in Los Angeles was very special, and I’ll miss being around him on a daily basis. He’s a fantastic coach and an even better person, and I wish him and his family all the best as he returns back to the state of Indiana.

Men’s Basketball Recruiting

Chris Smith, a 6’ 8” forward who played at Huntington Prep in Huntington, W. Va. this past season, signed a National Letter of Intent yesterday and became the sixth signee for the incoming freshmen class of the Men’s Basketball team.

According to the official site, Smith “will enroll at UCLA this summer and begin his freshman season in Westwood this fall.”

Pitcher Griffin Canning has been named to the midseason Golden Spikes Award watch list. Canning is one of 40 players nationally to be named to the list.

On Wednesday, May 31, USA Baseball will announce the semifinalists for the 2017 Golden Spikes Award. The list of semifinalists will be sent to a voting body consisting of past USA Baseball National Team coaches and press officers, members of the media that follow amateur baseball closely, select professional baseball personnel, current USA Baseball staff and the 39 previous winners of the award, representing a group of more than 200 voters.

Amateur baseball fans across the country will be able to vote for their favorite semifinalists at GoldenSpikesAward.com from May 31-June 9. On Wednesday, June 14, USA Baseball will announce the finalists for the award, and fan voting will once again commence that same day. Fan voting for the finalists will end on Friday, June 23.

They join Alexis Light, Mac May, Jenny Mosser and Emily Ryan who all signed during the early signing period in November.

The official site quotes head coach Michael Sealy, “"Due to NCAA rules, we had to wait to announce our complete 2017 class of recruits. Anne, Katie and Sabrina round out an amazing group for us.”

UCLA Gymnastics

Last, but not least, to pump you up for this weekend’s NCAA Gymnastics Championships, here’s a video the Athletic Department has posted to YouTube about the team.
