College Football Rankings: UCLA Breaks Into The Top 10 For The First Time Since 2005

The Bruins moved up to #9 in the AP Rankings and #10 in the Coaches'/USA Today Poll after their 37-10 victory over the UC Berkeley Bears.

After college football's first real upset filled weekend, there is a lot of movement in the rankings this week. Luckily, the Bruins benefit from this movement as UCLA took down UC Berkeley on Saturday night 37-10. Other Top 25 programs were not so lucky.

AP Top 25

The top 4 remains unchanged as Alabama, Oregon and Clemson handled business and Ohio State had a bye. Florida State, also on a bye, jumps up into the Top 5. SEC challengers LSU and Texas A&M both moved up a couple spots to #6 and #7 with their victories. Undefeated and uncontested Louisville struggled with a mediocre Rutgers team on Thursday night and stood pat at 8.

Behind them at #9 are the UCLA Bruins, moving into the Top 10 for the first time since Week 9 in 2005. Far too long and the Bruins are in a great place to move up a couple spots with a win over Stanford this upcoming weekend.

Miami rounds out the top 10, moving up 3 spots during their bye week. Bye weeks were very good to teams this past Saturday.

The rest of the top 25 is highlighted by a huge drops for Stanford (from 5 to 13), Georgia (from 7 to 15) and Oklahoma (12 to 18) and jumps for the real USC (14 to 11), Baylor (15 to 11), Missouri (25 to 14), Texas Tech (20 to 16), Fresno State (21 to 17) and Virginia Tech (24 to 19).

New entrants into the 25 are Auburn and Wisconsin after wins from both this weekend.

USA Today/Coaches' Poll

Lots of disparity between the Coaches' Poll and the AP Top 25. The weirdest thing to me is that Clemson somehow gained a first place vote despite struggling to beat Boston College (that team that got waxed by Southern Cal). Not difficult to imagine what conference that vote came from.

Other than that, the top 5 teams are the same with Ohio State and Clemson flip-flopped. Louisville somehow gets bumped up to #6, where they actually lost points in the AP Top 25. South Carolina has been higher in the Coaches' Poll all season, so them coming in at #9 isn't shocking.

UCLA rounds out the Top 10 for the Coaches' Poll.

The only new entrant for this poll is the undefeated Missouri Tigers who jumped all the way to 14 from being unranked. Michigan is somehow still hanging around at #24 for the Coaches' Poll, despite a loss that was preceded by two near losses to non-BCS teams.
