Just so everyone knows, this is definitely supposed to be published at this time slot.
Anyway...
Remember this guy? He was fun.
I saw this tweet pop up yesterday:
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>As promised to <a href="https://twitter.com/BruinNation">@BruinNation</a>; here's an excerpt of my Brett Hundley projection: <a href="http://t.co/1DS65kgncC">http://t.co/1DS65kgncC</a></p>— Kyle Crabbs (@NDTScouting) <a href="https://twitter.com/NDTScouting/status/562315228621586433">February 2, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
And since I am not one to turn down an invitation, I took a gander at the condensed breakdown.
I would be wont to not mention that Draftbreakdown.com has a more elaborate available as a part of their 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Prospectus, which is a much wiser and cheaper investment than something like an ESPN Insiders account if you are a football junkie about actual football analysis instead of stretching a narrative as thin as possible to pander at the water cooler instead of the film room.
Back to the analysis:
Some pros:
Arm Accuracy: Shows the ability to place ball on hands of receivers on all 3 levels. Capable of placing ball in tight windows, even from improper platform. Inconsistencies caused by mechanical lapses.
Arm Strength: Has the arm strength to make any throw on the field. Effortless ability to push ball down field. Strong, flat trajectory in window throws and intermediate areas. Ball explodes out of hand.
Poise: Constantly handling heavy pressure from both interior and exterior gaps. Defenses show high blitz % in effort to force mistakes, very good at staying calm vs. pressure and escaping/delivering ball
Pocket Awareness: Excellent at feeling pressure and shifting or sliding in the pocket to extend plays. Shows ability and willingness to climb the ladder in the pocket.
And some cons:
Decision Making: Can be guilty of tunnel vision in the pocket when under duress...Guilty of overextending plays in pocket; taking sacks
Mechanics: Lapses flash when rushing delivery with heavy traffic.
Progressions: Can take extra half second to move on from covered primary reads.
Footwork: Can have lapses in crispness out of gun.
Most of this is not overly surprising information to those who have watched Brett Hundley closer over the last three seasons.
Just a reminder of how blessed UCLA was to have Hundley. Compare this production to the previous decade plus of QB play since Cade McCown.
Production:
Career Statistics: 837/1241, 67.4% Completion, 11713 Total Yards, 105 Total Touchdowns, 25 INTs
Per game averages: Total Yardage/Start: 292.8, Total Touchdowns/Start: 2.63, Total INTs/Start: 0.63
Summary: Brett Hundley has performed at an extremely high level despite questionable talent surrounding him on the UCLA offense. Hundley will make some poor plays trying to make too much happen, but sub-par supporting cast has also helped prove ability to extend plays and handle pressure. Outstanding upside; has a skill set to be considered a Day 1 starter for a Quarterback hungry team.
NDT SCOUTING GRADE: – Projected First Round Value -
Brett is aiming high for his performance at the NFL Combine after declining an invitation to the Senior Bowl. I personally think a 4.55 40-yard dash is a tad ambitious, but would not be surprised in the least to see Hundley end up in that range. He will no doubt kill it at the Combine with interviews and the eye test because he is a physical specimen. The Combine absolutely plays to Hundley's most innate strengths.
Football Outsiders had a piece on Hundley based on the Virginia game which they published before the Kansas State game. That was a great piece which eventually turned into one of my favorite "wastes" of two hours in 2015 thus far.
This immersive film room experience with Matt Waldman and Eric Stoner is the kind of analysis I wish there was a television network dedicated to. I know that is unrealistic to the general public (I would be amazed if 10 people who read this actually are capable of making it through these two videos) and for good reason. It is not normal to care about a game that much. Some of us do, for whatever reason.
I will leave both here, if only to give me a place to reference on BN when I get in discussions about Hundley in a few months when the NFL Draft is closer.
Go Bruins!
