UPDATE (4/20/2015 7:30 am PT): According to the Dallas Morning News, Soso Jamabo has been charged with a felony count of evading police with a vehicle and issued written warnings for other issues after allegedly trying to evade police on Saturday:
Sotonye "Soso" Jamabo screamed that "his life was over," Kemp police said. But a representative for UCLA, where Jamabo has committed to play in the fall, wouldn’t say whether the arrest in Kaufman County would affect the running back’s future.
Jamabo, 19, was speeding on U.S. Highway 175 about 7:20 p.m. Saturday when Kemp police tried to pull him over, Chief Robert Walker said.
Jamabo, who was driving a pickup with three other teens, then ran a stop sign, swerved and sped past other cars with "total disregard for the public safety of others on the road," Walker said.
During the five- to seven-minute chase, which ended on State Highway 274, objects were thrown out of the pickup’s windows, police said. Jamabo eventually stopped, and Officer Kenny Boyle said he made him get on the ground so he could handcuff him.
"He got out screaming and hollering that his life was over," Boyle said.
Jamabo was booked into the Kaufman County jail about 1:30 a.m. Sunday on the charge of evading arrest with a vehicle. If convicted, he could face six months to two years in prison.
He was also given written warnings for minor consumption and possession of alcohol, speeding, disregarding a stop sign and not having his license with him.
He posted $7,500 bond Sunday afternoon. No one answered the door at Jamabo’s Plano home Sunday afternoon. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.
Soso Jamabo, one of UCLA Football's top incoming freshmen was arrested early Sunday on charges of drinking alcohol and fleeing police in a vehicle, according to the Dallas Morning News.
Jamabo was booked into the Kaufman County Jail at approximately 1:30am CT.
The Dallas Morning News article states that "Jamabo, 18, was held on charges of evading arrest with a vehicle, minor consumption of alcohol, minor in possession of alcohol, speeding, driving without possessing a driver’s license and disregarding a stop sign. He remained jailed Sunday morning."
According to the Dallas Morning News, Jamabo may have attended been at Plano West High School's senior prom earlier in the night. The article references a tweet of a picture of Jamabo in a suit with a date in a long gown with text saying "prom." Jamabo had retweeted the photo which has since been removed from Twitter.
UCLA has confirmed the arrest but refused further comment. The Daily Bruin quotes a statement from UCLA Associate Athletic Director for Communications Josh Rupprecht:
We are aware of the reports out of Dallas regarding Sotonye Jamabo. We are obviously concerned about these reports and are currently gathering more information. As this is a continuing process, we will withhold further comment until the appropriate time.
Jamabo was one of UCLA's biggest commitments on National Signing Day this year when he selected UCLA over Texas.
From the sounds of it, it sounds like a teenager making a teenage mistake, but we will have to wait and see what happens as a result of this.
We wish Soso and his friends and family our best in this difficult time.
