It's halftime. Meh. Defense played well but the offense just couldn't get it going though I'm happy to report that Kai'imi Fairnbairn nailed a 53 yard field goal to end the 2nd Quarter, giving the Sun Devils only a 15-10 lead.
For those who want to follow the game with Bill Roth on the airwaves, tune-in using, well, tunein below:
The UCLA Bruins somehow only take a 5-point deficit into the second half, down 15-10, against the Arizona State Sun Devils at the Rosebowl in Pasadena.
In the first quarter, the UCLA offense was anemic in the first quarter even giving up a safety. It was all ASU as they scored a TD from a short field (65 yard kick return) and forced the safety on Rosen. The tackling was abysmal so what exactly did the Bruins practice all week? The Bruins ended the first quarter with some hope as they drove down the field thanks to an ASU penalty and a quick throw over the middle to Duarte.
The second quarter started off with the Bruins driving but it quickly fell apart after a holding call negated a big Payton catch inside the five yard line. Luckily, the defense forced a 3 and out on ASU from their 5 yard line to give the Bruins excellent starting field position but the Bruins couldn't get a first down.
The Bruins started on their 10 yard line but fought for some first downs running and throwing, then Rosen aired it out to Johnny Johnson for a big play of 55 yards down the field. Then, it was quick pass to Duarte for a TD bringing the score to 9-8 in favor of the Sun Devils. It was necessary 8 play drive for 88 yards to give the defense some rest.
The kick and punt coverage by UCLA was bad with lazy noodle arm tackles giving ASU starting field position near midfield. The Sun Devils drove down the field and were knocking on the door but had to settle for a field goal, 12-7 ASU.
The Bruins made a beautiful play with a Rosen fake to Fuller then thrown and catch to Payton for 25 yards. However, the next play was a run by Perkins for no yards then Rosen threw an ill-advised throw which was picked off by the ASU LB Moeakiola. The Bruins held for a FG to keep the score within one touchdown.
With 0:21 seconds left, the Bruins drove down the field quickly and had Kai'imi Fairbairn in for a 53 yard field goal. And he nailed it! I'm so happy for Kai'imi as he has been a very good college kicker and I'm happy to see him have some success.
That's it, let's hope the second half goes better for the Bruins on offense and the defense continues to ball out.
Go Bruins!!!!!
