Tonight, the UCLA Bruins welcome the Arizona State Sun Devils to the Rose Bowl in a Pac-12 Conference matchup.
Arizona State is a team that has been inconsistent all season. They lost two of their three out-of-conference games. Then, they squeaked past Oregon and lost to Stanford. They beat both Washington and Utah before losing to Southern Cal. Last week, they toppled Colorado.
Let’s look at the keys to the game.
Keys to the Game
1. Stop the Sun Devil Running Backs. So far this season, ASU has operated on a running back-by-committee tandem consisting of Kalen Ballage and Demario Richard. In order to win this game, UCLA will need to find a way to stop them both. If they can do that, it will be a lot closer. If not, look for the Sun Devils to use the play action pass to freeze the linebackers for bigger gains.
2. Make offensive plays early, often, and late. In all likelihood, this game will be a shootout and, in order for UCLA to win, the Bruin offense will need to have a game like Hawai’i rather than one like Washington. And, they will need to make sure they score last because they will need it to win.
3. Win the Takeaway Game. UCLA has not really controlled the takeaway game all season long. But, in a closely matched game like this, every little advantage helps and UCLA will need to take the ball away from the Sun Devils.
