The Seven-Win Sark era is over at Southern Cal.
Talk about kicking someone when he's down.
Pat Haden took the inevitable step on Monday and fired Coach Steve Sarkisian. Here is Pat Haden's statement:
After careful consideration of what is in the best interest of the university and our student-athletes, I have made the decision to terminate Steve Sarkisian, effective immediately.
I want to thank Clay Helton for stepping into the interim head coach role, and I want to add how proud I am of our coaching staff and players and the way they are responding to this difficult situation.
Through all of this we remain concerned for Steve and hope that it will give him the opportunity to focus on his personal well being.
Steve Sarkisian is aware of the termination and is deeply disappointed. But right now his No. 1 priority is getting himself well. To that end, he has checked himself into a residential treatment facility. He's grateful for all the support that will help him get through this difficult time.
Apparently, the reason the move was made now has to do with the fact that there may be more details which have yet to surface. Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman tweeted:
Source on why #USC & Pat Haden made the move now to fire Sarkisian & was told they'd learned that more bad behavior had occurred/may surface— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) October 12, 2015
At least now, Sarkisian will be able to focus on getting healthy. We wish him the best as he fights his addiction issues.
That said, Coach Mora now has the opportunity to become the first football coach in UCLA history to defeat four different USC football coaches in four years.
