UCLA 2015 National Signing Day Afternoon Update - Broadus Commits, Ulbrich Leaving?

Keeping track of Signing Day's afternoon developments.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

Well folks, it has been an exciting, crazy National Signing Day. I didn't think that anything could surpass the 2010 NSD under Rick Neuheisel in that respect, but the Bruins have picked up several major commitments this morning, with a couple more announcements of interest imminent and even a couple of guys who are wavering/facing the hometown SEC 'pressure' to stay home.

The morning started out with a series of signing day announcements that Bruin fans have waited years to see. News started coming at us bright and early, with a pre-dawn (pacific time) announcement from 4-star TE Chris Clark that he he turned down Jim Harbaugh and Michigan to become a Bruin. A few minutes later, the biggest LOI day BOOM came to Westwood courtesy of Texas, as SoSo Jamabo committed to UCLA and gave Jim Mora the elite, gamebreaking talent that he missed out on in the last 2 classes. Josh Wariboko and Roquan Smith announced at the 8am hour - commitments that are not fully wrapped up yet.

And then the silly season portion of the day reared its head. Later in the morning, reports started coming out of Georgia that Smith had not really made his final, binding decision. At the same time that Roquan's high school coach pulled him into a lengthy meetingFox Sports reported based on an unnamed source that Jeff Ulbrich was leaving UCLA to join the Atlanta Falcons coaching staff, likely as linebackers coach.

As of 1pm Pacific time, UCLA has received Letters of Intent from the following players:

  • Cordell Broadus
  • Chris Clark
  • Tevita Halalilo
  • De Chaun Holiday
  • Soso Jamabo
  • Andre James
  • Stephen Johnson
  • Will Lockett
  • Keisean Lucier-South
  • Bolu Olorunfunmi
  • Colin Samuel
  • Octavius Spencer
  • Fred Ulu-Perry
  • Rick Wade
  • Josh Woods
At the moment, UCLA commmit Roquan Smith has held off on making his verbal commitment final in the wake of the Ulbrich to Atlanta reports, while Josh Wariboko has yet to fax in his LOI; per Rivals.com regional reporter Rob Cassidy, Josh remains committed to the Bruins.

The Bruins currently have the #6 recruiting class overall per Scout.com, and when ranked by star rating, the #1 class in the nation (with Roquan Smith counted as a UCLA commit). Rivals.com ranks this as the #13 overall class, but the 4th best class ranked purely by average star rating. 247Sports composite ranking places UCLA at #7.

This is your afternoon open thread to share your thoughts on the day's events. Do keep in mind that we have a separate post on Ulbrich's reported departure, as well as more detailed posts on the front page for today's commits.

GO BRUINS!
