UCLA added another recruit this afternoon when wide receiver Devon Cooley committed to UCLA Football. While Cooley played last season at Buena Park High School, this year he will be attending Josh Rosen’s alma mater St. John Bosco.
Regardless he is a local kid who had been offered by both Washington schools, Oregon and both Arizona schools. He also earned the MVP last month at Southern Cal’s Rising Stars camp. (Hopefully, he turns the SC t-shirt he was wearing in a picture on his Twitter account into something he cleans his car with!)
Of course, he made his announcement today on Twitter.
Proud to say that I've committed to The University of California, Los Angeles. #4sUp #8clap pic.twitter.com/JvIsOXz5Lz

The Bruins originally offered him a scholarship at the end of June last year. He also attended the UNLV game last season and this picture of him outside the Rose Bowl could be one of the last times he’s there without a UCLA uniform on.

Cooley is 6’2” tall and weighs 173 pounds. He runs a 4.88 40-yard dash and has a 30.1-inch vertical jump.
His junior year highlights are available on Hudl. My favorite clip starts at the 4:20 mark when he chases down a quarterback whose school colors are ketchup and mustard. Could it be an eventual preview? Maybe. But his future certainly seems to be on offense rather than defense as he seems to able to separate himself well from defenders and make plays in double coverage while also being able to catch the ball between a corner and a safety.
Scout has rated him as a four-star receiver while Scout’s sister site 247Sports has him as a consensus 3-star recruit. Cooley is one of those players who shows the subjectivity of the star rankings. Ultimately, star rankings don’t matter because it’s how a player develops during college that’s important. After reading through his tweets, this young man’s work ethic looks to be impressive and I hope it carries over to a great career as a Bruin and beyond.
At the very least, he certainly seems capable of making the big play while running all sorts of different routes and, judging from this tape, he can’t get to Westwood soon enough.
Welcome to Westwood, Devon!
Go Bruins!!!
