Triple Boom Sunday: UCLA Football Lands Commitment from DB Olaijah Griffin

Rapper Warren G’s son gave the Bruins a surprise commitment today at a recruiting event at the new Wasserman Center.

Student Sports

UCLA invited recruits to a BBQ on campus today to show off the new Wasserman Football Center and the new building is already paying off with recruiting. That’s because, today, the Bruins landed not one, not two, but three big recruits.

Bruin Report Online called it “one of [UCLA]’s biggest days in recruiting since Jim Mora has been UCLA's coach. Perhaps it’s its biggest non-National Signing Day day.”

One of those recruits was the son of West Coast rapper and hip-hop producer Warren G. That’s four-star cornerback Olaijah Griffin from Mission Viejo HS.

Griffin is ranked as the number 8 cornerback in the country by 247Sports.

Griffin announced his commitment on Twitter.

@OlaijahGriffin

Griffin is 6’0” tall and weighs in at 170 pounds. He runs a 4.69 40-yard dash and an 11.24 100-yard dash, according to his Hudl profile. It also lists him with a 36.5 vertical jump and a 4.69 shuttle time.

Here are his junior year highlights from Hudl.

From those highlights, it sure looks like Griffin is a hard-hitting corner with a nose for the football. I have little doubt that he will cause fits for Pac-12 quarterbacks in the years to come.

Griffin’s commitment was a surprise because, according to Scout’s Greg Biggins, Griffin has mentioned UCLA in past conversations. Griffin’s father Warren G told Biggins:

I know he wanted to stay close to home and it's tough to beat UCLA. Jim Mora is an NFL coach and Demetrice Martin has known Olaijah since before he was in high school so I know they'll look after him.

Griffin had been recruited by Michigan, Oklahoma, Florida State, Clemson, Southern Cal and 4 other Pac-12 schools.

Welcome to Westwood, Olaijah!

Go Bruins!!!
