UCLA Football Commit Dorian Thompson-Robinson Has Easy League Opener

The Gaels opened Class 4A Southwest League play with an easy 58-0 win over Bonanza on Saturday.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson had a perfect passing day Saturday on the field against league opponent Bonanza. DTR was 3/3 for 63 yards and 2 TD’s. He also had two rushing attempts for 44 yards and 1 TD.

Why did Thompson-Robinson only attempt three passes you might ask? Part of the struggle with powerhouse high school programs like the Gaels is that when they enter league play the level of competition varies greatly from week to week. This was one of those league games against a lesser opponent. Thompson-Robinson only played 11 plays, as the Gaels jumped out to a pretty staggering 41-0 lead in the first seven minutes and 15 seconds of the 1st quarter.

So, for a quarterback that has not had a lot of time under center at the varsity level, these types of games are not ideal for Dorian and his continued development. However, they are part of the landscape of high school football.

For the purposes of this article, I’ll take a few minutes to highlight a great NFL Network show called Elite 11. This show was filmed earlier in the year and is the most prestigious high school quarterback event in the country, with high school seniors selected through an exhaustive process to be coached by current and former NFL Quarterbacks. Dorian Thompson-Robinson was one of the QB’s chosen for this competition. The video clip below highlights episode number two, which is the episode that really focused on Thompson-Robinson.

Episode 3 will be coming on this Tuesday, September 26th at 10:30 PM ET on the NFL Network. The next episode follows the last day of competition for the quarterbacks to make it into the Elite 11 and receive their ticket to the next round in Beaverton, Oregon. The final evaluation of the quarterbacks will be based on their performance and final scores, during timed 7-on-7’s. Catch up with the first two episodes in their entirety on YouTube.

As for the next high school opponent for DTR’s Bishop Gorman Gaels, they have a home conference game vs. Spring Valley (Las Vegas, NV) on Thursday, September 28 at 7 pm PT.

Good luck, DTR!
