The UCLA Bruins 2019 football recruiting class added another commitment tonight when three-star linebacker John Ward from Palmdale High School announced his commitment to the Bruins.
Ward made the announcement tonight on Twitter.
One current Bruin who is excited to have Ward join UCLA is linebacker Rahyme Johnson. Johnson immediately sent a congratulatory tweet.
Ward’s Hudl.com profile lists him at 6’4” tall and weighing 225 pounds. It also lists Ward with a 235-lb. bench press, 315-lb. squat, 370-lb. deadlift, and 200-lb. clean. While Ward also plays QB at Palmdale, his future at UCLA appears to be on defense based on the fact that it looks like Bruin linebacker coach Don Pellum has been recruiting him,
After watching his highlight reel, this much is clear: John Ward is a hard hitter who finds a way to get across the field to make tackles.
One of my favorite tackles which Ward makes comes at about the 2:10 mark. While playing middle linebacker, he drops back into pass coverage and then moves from the middle of the field towards the sideline to layout the opposing quarterback who had scrambled out of the pocket and was starting to gain some yards. It’s a really nice hit.
While most of the video focuses on Ward’s defensive play, it also seems to have good hands. Despite being listed offensively as a quarterback, the video has a few plays where Ward looks to be playing tight end and he seems to catch the ball well. That skill translates over to defense for him as he can be seen intercepting quite a few passes.
Overall, Ward looks to be a solid addition for the Bruin defense.
Welcome to Westwood, John!
