Most coaches hold the National Signing Day press conferences in the mid-to-late afternoon for the purpose of waiting for all letters of intent to arrive. That’s because, under NCAA rules, a school cannot publicly discuss a recruit until he signs his National Letter of Intent.
So, when a coach holds his National Signing Day press conference before noon, it’s certainly an indication that the program isn’t expecting many more players to sign that day.
With NLIs signed and submitted from all three of UCLA’s verbal commitments in already today, UCLA Bruins football coach Chip Kelly met with the media before noon. That would seem to indicate that Kelly is not expecting any more letters of intent to be signed today.
Kelly did officially announce the hiring of Jason Kafusi as the team’s new outside linebackers coach. His hiring had been rumored a few weeks ago, but UCLA had yet to make the hiring official until now.
Kelly also mentioned that tight ends coach Derek Sage will be adding the duties of special teams coordinator.
Overall, there wasn’t much else that was earth-shatterring. Some of the other topics Kelly briefly addressed was the ongoing talent drain, whether Justin Frye will have playcalling duties and the walk-on program.
Thanks to UCLA Athletics for sharing the video of today’s press conference.
Go Bruins!
